About thermowells

The thermowell is the process-wetted part of a thermometer that protects the insert with the temperature sensor from harsh and aggressive process conditions such as high pressure, high velocity flow and corrosive substances. A thermowell also allows the measurement insert to be replaced without interrupting the process. Thermowell design, manufacturing processes, specific industry standards and plant certification requirements influence the choice of thermowell type.

Portfolio description

  • Thermowell design – welded, barstock or forged
  • Wide range of industrial and hygienic process connections – e.g. threaded, flanged, weld-in, socket weld, compression fitting, clamp, and many others more
  • Wide choice of materials – from stainless steel to alloys to ceramics and more
  • With or without extension neck
  • Designs according to DIN 43772, ASME B40.9 or NAMUR NE 170

Our service offering

Endress+Hauser supports you in selecting, configuring and ordering the suitable thermowell for your process conditions and specifications.

1. Ordering options

  • Thermometer and suitable thermowell are supplied as a pre-assembled single unit under one ordering code.
  • Thermometer and thermowell are supplied as two units with separate ordering codes. This option can be used in project business with external plant builders, thanks to the flexibility of installing the units at different times / locations.
  • Thermowell as a stand-alone device, e.g. as a spare part or retrofit.

2. Simple and comprehensive product configuration according to specifications (thermowell standards, thermometer connection, process connection, tip shape, dimensions…)

3. Thermowell sizing / strength calculation ensures the structural integrity of the thermowell and its ability to withstand the specified process conditions. This calculation takes into account the material properties and geometric dimensions of the thermowell, as well as the process conditions. A successful calculation verifies that the thermowell is safe and suitable for use in the intended application.
