Water quality monitoring within power plants is an essential activity both in maintaining operational efficiency and minimizing downtime caused by corrosion and leakages. Constant contact with water and steam raises the risk of corrosion and scaling on all metal surfaces. With the right instrumentation for water quality measurement and analysis such risks can be offset, and costly repairs avoided.
Smart analysis solutions to prevent corrosion and scaling
Water quality monitoring parameters (pH, silicate, DO and conductivity) in the water steam circuit.
Avoid system corrosion with pH monitoring
Feed-water pH has a direct impact upon corrosion levels in the water-steam circuit, and pH values can vary depending on the location in the circuit itself. To prevent corrosion, plant operators therefore need to carefully monitor pH and implement conditioning according to one of two modes depending on the installed equipment, either universal or more commonly slightly alkaline.
Our expertise in the field
Endress+Hauser offers unique sensors and transmitters for high-quality pH measurement at multiple points in the water-steam circuit.
- Monitor pH levels reliably even in highly alkaline media or hazardous areas with our Orbisint CPS11D glass electrode based on Memosens technology
- Optional salt ring for low conductivity applications in deionized water such as boiler feed water
Protect turbines with precise silica monitoring
Silica can deposit on any surface steam touches, leading to a solid layer on turbine blades and causing abrasion and blockages. Removing silica deposits with chemicals or mechanical processes can cost valuable time and resources.
Our expertise in the field
Endress+Hauser analyzers offer continuous silica monitoring at multiple points in the water-steam cycle.
- Save time and costs with our Silica analyzer Liquiline System CA80SI
- Monitor high pressure and low-pressure turbine steam, steam drum, condensate extraction pumps (CEP), make-up water/ boiler feed water, and H.P. heaters/economizer
- Avoid costly delays in start-up and manual test sample batches
Prevent corrosion with Dissolved Oxygen (DO) monitoring
Oxygen can result in corrosion damage to the components of the water-steam cycle and must only be present in trace quantities (ppb). Under alkaline operating conditions, mechanical de-aeration and chemical scavenger additives are needed to remove the DO and to minimize corrosion.
Our expertise in the field
Endress+Hauser’s Memosens technology for oxygen sensors combined with our Liquiline transmitter allowing for reliable lab calibration, easy maintenance and minimal downtime of the measurement point.
- Increase process safety and availability of the measuring point
- Minimize process downtime during sensor exchange thanks to automatic sensor recognition
Avoid scaling through detection of conductivity variations
Dissolved solids present in the water-steam cycle can create scaling on equipment and technical failures. The conductivity of pure water is almost zero and even a small amount of salt can increase corrosion dramatically, therefore the conductivity parameter is a useful indicator of dissolved solids and impurities caused e.g. by cooling water and air leakages, and the likelihood of scaling.
Our expertise in the field
Compact or panel mounted for simplicity, the Endress+Hauser Liquiline range of multi-parameter transmitters leverage Memosens digital sensor technology to help detect dissolved solids at multiple points in the cycle.
